The Truth About Leaky Gut

“All disease begins in the gut” said Hippocrates, Father of Modern Medicine.

This quote is 2,500 years old!

Have we been missing something?

Leaky Gut Syndrome: many of us have heard of it.

But how many of us really know what it means?

Do you?

Do you know how it may be affecting you?

Do you even know how to identify it?

Ok, enough of the interrogation Dr. Cooper

The more scholastic name for Leaky Gut Syndrome is Increased Intestinal Permeability.
This means the Intestinal Lining has become weak and easer to pass through. Like the Offensive Line of the Cincinnati Bengal’s in the Superbowl of 2022.

Sorry Guys!

For many people it is the cause of their chronic diarrhea, constipation, bloating, nutritional deficiency, fatigue, headaches, difficulty concentrating, temporary and long-term food sensitivities, skin problems and pain.

It is also found that Leaky Gut Syndrome is correlated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, Chronic Liver Disease, Diabetes, Autism, Food Allergies, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Anxiety and Depression.

Leaky Gut is a condition in which common and uncommon microbes, toxins and bugs are able to seep through the Intestinal Lining into our bloodstream (Where they should not be).

Here’s an example, our gut and Intestines are the super-highway for many food particles, bacteria and more. We rely on our intestines to transfer these particles to their intended distention, without disruption or delay.

This process promotes our digestion, immune function and neurotransmission (like serotonin, dopamine etc). What would happen if my highway had damage and unexpected detours? Not only would it slow my digestion, but it would also send my particles of their course.

Oh no, my serotonin may never show up!

And hey why haven’t I gotten my nutrients yet?

I’m sending the right goods and material but I’m not getting any benefit.

And to make matters worse; my goods have shown up to wrong warehouse and they are not thrilled about the about, this is getting inflammatory quickly!

Sounds bad, right?

Because it is.

There are several known risk factors for this condition:
Genetic Predisposition:
Some people may be especially sensitive to their environment and triggers for the condition

Poor Diet:
Diets that have allergens, inflammatory foods, GMO’s and additives can be a trigger for this condition

Chronic Stress
Stress can increase your risk factors for many reasons including decrease gut function and altered lifestyle choices

Toxins
None of us can completely avoid toxins, but we can minimize them. Our bodies are only equipped to detox a certain amount of wastes. If we are in an environment or expose ourselves to too many plastics, metals, and atmospheric contaminants we are at risk.

Unfortunately, this syndrome is growing more and more rapidly in our communities and the mainstream medical community has been slow to adopt this as a formal diagnosis even though it has been identified in medical literature for over 100 years. This does not come as surprise, because most mainstream medical providers weren’t taught to diagnose Leaky Gut during medical school.

Donald Kirby, the director of the center of Human Nutrition at Cleveland Clinic, said “It’s a grey area”,” physicians don’t know enough about the gut, which is our bodies biggest immune system organ”

Enough of the bad news!

Here is the good news; the word “syndrome” suggests that this is a reversible condition. You do not have to continue to “maintain” while others are thriving. If it is your goal to decrease constipation, bloating, depression, fatigue and more. This is the blog for you!

What do the following have in common:
Processed Foods
Refined Oils
High Sugar Foods
Alcohol
Food Sensitivities
High-Fat Foods

You guessed it, they are triggers for Leaky Gut and Intestinal Damage!

The number one thing you can do, starting now, is eliminate these triggers. Next, your holistic provider will do a thorough stool analysis, informing us on your Gut Balance, Enzymes and Insufficiencies. Next, your holistic provider may elect to do an analysis on your current food sensitivities as these may be compromising your Intestinal balance. Finally, your natural provider will identify your nutritional, social, and physical needs to repair your gut. Keep in mind Leaky Gut Syndrome does not develop overnight, so the standard treatment time is 4 weeks-6 Months based on severity.

Other tests for Leaky Gut Include:
Zonulin or Lactulose Test
IgG Food Intolerance Test
Organic Acid Vitamin and Mineral Test
Lactulose Mannitol Test

Dr. Coopers 4 Step Approach:
1.Remove the irritant causing the damage
2.Replace the nutritional and mineral deficiencies
3.Restore the foundation of the structure being damaged
4.Reinforce with supplementation and adapto-genic herbs as needed
